§ 13.1.8. Seating and trash receptacles
a.
Intent: Provide a variety of seating to facilitate public use of the Plaza and that a portion of that seating is permanently affixed to the Plaza.
b.
Plaza designers should carefully consider the variety, dimensions, location, and configuration of seating with the intent to maximize opportunities for comfortable and convenient seating that emphasizes social interaction. Fifty percent (50%) of seating shall be permanent. A seat is defined as a chair or 2 linear feet of bench seat.
i.
Variety: There are six types of seating that may be used to satisfy the seating requirements for Plazas: moveable seating, fixed individual seats, fixed benches, seat walls, planter ledges, and seating steps. One seat for every 40 square feet of Plaza is required. A skateboard deterrent placed at minimum five feet intervals between each continuous fixed seat is required to prevent skateboarding activities.
ii.
Location: To ensure that adequate seating is provided throughout the Plaza, a portion of the required seating must be located within 15 feet of the sidewalk.
iii.
Seat Depth: A seat must be 12—18 inches deep. Each edge of a ledge that is 30 inches deep and that can be accessed from both ends may count as seating.
iv.
Prohibitions: Deterrents to seating, such as spikes, rails, or deliberately uncomfortable materials or shapes, placed on surfaces that would otherwise be suitable for seating are prohibited within Plazas.
c.
At least one trash receptacle is required for every Plaza.
