The different AEGB programs (single-family, multifamily and commercial) have similar - yet distinct - procedures under which a rating is earned. The differences in these processes reflect the differences in building types and the differences in professional need that each program covers.

Beginning October 2010 all AEGB projects will be rated using a web-based online system developed to facilitate the management of said projects. This online platform allows the rating process to be tailored to the requirements of each of the three programs. The process flow for each program is unique to that program.

Certain City of Austin ordinances and programs (for example, the S.M.A.R.T. Housing Program) mandate that a particular AEGB star rating be achieved. In addition, an AEGB rating can be required of projects located in defined areas of the city. Since every project will have its own, unique set of characteristics, each project is responsible for determining what requirements it must meet.
